Software developer Giant Matrix has two applications that can help with the first two tasks.

If you want to remove obsolete files, broken shortcuts and duplicate files, Giant Matrix has Giant Disk Cleaner to offer. The great thing about this application is that it can also securely delete files and secure wipe all the free clusters and spare or hidden areas on the hard drive.

If you want to check your Windows Registry for errors, Giant Matrix has the aptly named Registry Washer application to offer. The application comes with a straightforward interface that groups Registry Washer’s functionality as follows:

Registry Washer – from here you can scan the Registry for errors and you can restore backups.
Registry Tools – from this section you can access the BHO Manager (lets you manage Internet Explorer components), you can search within the Windows Registry, and you can access a Windows Startup Manager (lets you select which applications will be automatically loaded at startup).
Settings – in this section you can play with Registry Washer’s general settings, select which drives/files/folders/registry paths to exclude when Registry Washer scans the system, and schedule Windows Washer to run at automatically.
Help – various options to help you should you encounter a problem, if you want to update Windows Washer, if you want to purchase the application.

Download – the download weighs in at little over 3MB, which is a quite lightweight. A 3MB download will complete in no time at all, even if you have to contend with a less than spectacular internet connection. I don’t know about you, but I don’t particularly like waiting a long time for a download to complete.

Installation – just follow the steps presented by the setup wizard and you will be done in no time at all. During the installation process you are asked if you would like a Registry Washer shortcut on your desktop. You are also asked if you would like to choose the directory where Registry Washer will be installed – this is a feature that other Giant Matrix-developed applications lack.

Limitations – you can use Registry Washer free of charge for a trial period of 15 days. Once that trial period is over, you will have to get a license to keep using the application. Please note that if you get a license within the first 3 days of the trial period, you will get a $10 discount.
